Wildcats put streak on the line

Benedictine visits Baldwin City tonight

? The Baker University football team will look to continue its three-game home winning streak tonight against Benedictine.

The Wildcats dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference after suffering a 50-19 setback to Lindenwood on Saturday in St. Charles, Mo. The Ravens (1-2, 1-2) toppled Avila, 23-13, last week for their first victory of the season after dropping two close games.

“I truly believe this is a big early-season game for our program,” fourth-year Baker coach Mike Grossner said. “Benedictine is a big, fast and physical opponent.”

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Liston Stadium.

Sophomore quarterback Mack Brown has been steady for Baker. He has completed 63 percent (34 of 54) of his passes for 403 yards.

Running back Jesse Thomas averages 98.5 rushing yards a game to lead Benedictine. Other key players for the Ravens are quarterback Ryan Kelly (31 of 65 passing for 409 yards) and receiver Conor Walsh (eight receptions for 153 yards).

The Wildcats opened the 2006 season with a 17-13 victory over Benedictine for their first win over the Ravens since 1999. Baker hasn’t defeated Benedictine at Liston Stadium since a 31-3 victory over the Ravens in 1998.

“We should have most of the kinks worked out by now and need to play at a very high level for this contest,” Grossner said. “This game should give us a pretty good gauge of where we stand going into the middle of the season.”
