Mets end skid; Brewers fall

Mets 8, Nationals 4

Washington – David Wright drove in three runs, Moises Alou had three hits, and New York beat Washington, ending a five-game losing streak that cut the Mets’ lead in the NL East to 11â2 games.

Pelfrey (3-7) allowed three runs in five-plus innings to win his third consecutive decision. After he left, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Heilman combined for three shutout innings, a stretch that began with Sosa getting a strikeout and a double play to escape a first-and-third, no-outs jam in the sixth. Billy Wagner gave up an unearned run in the ninth.

Astros 5, Brewers 4, 10 inn.

Houston – Hunter Pence singled home the winning run off Matt Wise in the 10th inning, and the Houston dropped Milwaukee out of first place in the NL Central. Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Astros closer Brad Lidge to force extra innings. But the Brewers, who had won four in a row, wound up falling one game behind Chicago for the division lead.

Carlos Lee homered and hit an RBI single for the Astros, who won for just the fifth time in 18 games against Milwaukee this year.

Cardinals 2, Phillies 1, 10 inn.

St. Louis – Yadier Molina singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning, and St. Louis stopped Philadelphia’s six-game winning streak.

Rockies 6, Dodgers 5

Denver – Brad Hawpe hit a two-run homer in the eighth as Colorado rallied for the second straight night. Hawpe’s homer to right came off Jonathan Broxton (4-4), who also gave up a two-run shot to Ryan Spilborghs the night before.

Braves 5, Marlins 1

Atlanta – Edgar Renteria had three hits, including a homer, Chipper Jones had two hits and drove in a run, and Chuck James allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings.

Cubs 3, Reds 2

Chicago – Alfonso Soriano homered, and Chicago scored a strange, go-ahead run in the eighth inning after Ken Griffey Jr. was injured to beat Cincinnati.

Soriano hit a leadoff homer in the first, then kept the score 2-all when he threw out Norris Hopper at the plate on Brandon Phillips’ single to left in the eighth.

Griffey left the game with a lower abdominal strain.

Padres 5, Pirates 3

San Diego – Scott Hairston hit a three-run homer.

Diamondbacks 6, Giants 4

Phoenix – Conor Jackson homered.
