Southwest outlasts Shawnee Mission West

Southwest freshman Cody Oller put away a tight game in the fourth quarter with an 18-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 24-12 victory Monday at Shawnee Mission West.

The Bulldogs (3-1) jumped out to a 16-0 lead behind the running attack of Matt Cole and Preston Schenck. Cole opened the scoring with a 68-yard run, followed by a 20-yard jaunt by Schenck.

Shawnee Mission West closed the gap with a pair of touchdowns, but Oller’s run provided the winning margin. The Bulldogs amassed 256 yards on the ground in the victory. Cole also contributed with six points on three conversions.

The defense played a role in the Bulldogs third win of the season as Cole recovered a fumble and both P.J. Paez and Trevor Leslie had interceptions.

Southwest travels Thursday to St. James Academy.
