Funding for heritage group approved

Commissioners unanimously approved a $25,000 funding request from the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area. The city funding will come from transient guest tax revenues that are paid by hotel guests in the community.

Commissioners had tentatively approved the request at last week’s meeting, but put it on the agenda for official approval Tuesday.

Members of the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area hope to raise $700,000 over a two-year period from private sources, grants and other governments in Kansas and Missouri. The money will be used to set up offices, pay staff, and work to promote the area as the birthplace of the Civil War.
