Lawrence High School’s Class of 1987 plans to celebrate 20 years since graduation with a reunion Sept. 28-29.

The weekend’s activities will kick off with the LHS Homecoming Parade on Friday. Class members wanting to ride in a float should meet at 1:45 p.m. at the Douglas County Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St.

A tailgate party is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Haskell Stadium before the group attends the LHS football game. A tent is planned for the east side of the stadium near the softball field.

Saturday’s events feature a tour of LHS at 10 a.m. Participants should meet at the Chesty Lion in the school parking lot.

A family picnic at Holcom Park, 2601 W. 25th St., will be from noon to 3 p.m.

The main event is planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is sponsoring an emergency preparedness presentation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at VFW Post No. 852, 138 Ala. Terri Smith, of Douglas County Emergency Management, will talk about how Kansas has prepared for emergencies.

Liz Karr is serving an Italian dinner at 5:30 p.m., and donations for the meal will be accepted. All are welcome.

Jonathan Randall Nyp and Rachel Ann Nyp, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Amelia Cecilia Nyp, born July 3, 2007, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Her maternal grandparents are Eric and Debbie Larson. Paternal grandparents are Randy and Susan Nyp. Great-grandparents are Jack and Doris Larson and Vida Nyp.

Jason and Kelly Desino, Eudora, announce the birth of their daughter, Lilly Eileen Desino, born Aug. 22, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Merriam.

Her maternal grandparents are Larry and Kathy Rizor, Battle Creek, Mich. Paternal grandparents are Tony and Stephanie Desino, of Deer Park, Wis. Great-grandmothers are Eileen Sargent, Battle Creek; and Marieta McLane, Lady Lake, Fla.

Louie and Betty McElhaney, Lawrence, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary with family and friends recently at the home of Julie and Scott Tuley, Lawrence.

A number of longtime friends from Lawrence, their four children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren attended along with Kari and Dudley Jacobs, Nashville, Tenn.; Larry Dale and Marlena McElhaney, Aurora, Colo.; Wayne and Jeanette Gilbreth, Bartlesville, Okla.; and Betty Sue and Glen Nelle, Harrison, Ark.

Louie and Betty were married July 25, 1955, in Ozark, Ark.

Their children are Jere McElhaney, Brenda McElhaney-Parks and Julie and Scott Tuley, all of Lawrence; and Liz Anne McElhaney.

The couple request no gifts.

Kendra Verhage, Lawrence, received the Hector and Frances Evans Lawrence Community Theatre College Scholarship.

The $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to a full-time student attending a two- or four-year college who volunteers at least 100 hours at the community theater. Verhage will attend Johnson County Community College this year.

The scholarship is given by Marti and Michael Butell, in honor or Marti Butell’s parents.

Adam Fales, Perry, graduated from Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program this summer at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. Adam is a seventh-grader at Corpus Christi Catholic School.

The weeklong camp is for students entering grades 7-10 and emphasizes teamwork, leadership and problem-solving. Activities include a space shuttle simulator, launching homemade rockets, directing a robotic mission and learning solar observation techniques.

Ashley Coffman, Lawrence, is a member of the peer ministry program for 2007-2008 at Bethany College in Lindsborg. In its first year, the program aims to create a culture of students helping students, said the Rev. Noni Strand, campus pastor at Bethany.

Cambry McNabb, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2007 quarter at DePaul University in Chicago. Students named to the list earned a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. McNabb is studying political science.
