School warns parents after stranger scare

A fifth-grade Sunflower School student who walked to class on Friday morning reported a stranger – a white man in a black vehicle – asked him three times if he wanted a ride to school.

The boy said no each time and then ran to school, said Jason Jones, the principal of the school at 2521 Inverness Drive.

The school notified the student’s parents and called a Lawrence police school resource officer, who took a report. The student is safe.

Jones said administrators were sending home a notification to parents Friday on precautions to take while walking to and from school, mainly staying away from anyone the student does not know.

Jones said the student took the correct action.
