Call it the grand finale.

A Lawrence group for two years has raised $225,000 to form an endowment to benefit music education.

Now, organizers have put together one last event as part of their initial funding push. It’s a Kansas City Symphony performance at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Lied Center on Kansas University’s West Campus.

“I think it’s going to be a great event to showcase the symphony and to showcase the music education program we already have in Lawrence public schools,” said Bob Dinsdale, chairman of Music Works!, the group working with the Lawrence Schools Foundation.

The group hopes the concert raises $20,000, Dinsdale said. The concert will be part of the symphony’s four-year-old Support School Music program, which has raised a total of more than $66,000 at concerts for Kansas City-area school districts.

“Any chance that we have to help school districts raise money for either instruments or lessons, that’s part of our mission,” said Andrew Birgensmith, the symphony’s general manager.

The concert will include pieces by Verdi, Mendelssohn, Rossini and Tchaikovsky. All Lawrence junior high and high school students can observe the symphony’s rehearsal earlier in the day.

Advanced high school students will be able to sit on stage with the musicians during the rehearsal, Birgensmith said.

Katherine Dinsdale said facility fees and per diem and travel expenses for musicians will be the only expenses.

“It’s just a way for the community to join with the symphony and the Lied Center to say that music education is important,” Bob Dinsdale said.
