Parade protests Columbus Day

More than 100 people rallied Monday in South Park to protest the celebration of Columbus Day.

The American Indian Studies Club of Haskell Indian Nations University sponsored the demonstration, “Celebrate Indigenous People Not Our Genocide.” The event began at noon with speakers presenting their views, reciting poetry, and singing songs.

Attendees then took to the streets with signs and banners in hand, chanting “We will never go away, this is Indigenous Peoples Day. “The police-escorted procession began at South Park and moved north along Massachusetts Street to Seventh Street, then back to the Haskell campus.

A series of “teach-ins” was scheduled for Monday afternoon on the Haskell campus.
