Lawrence voters were expected to stage a heavy turnout to vote on a $2.25 million bond issue for new fire stations, a public swimming pool, airport relocation and a city garage-warehouse.

The U.S. Senate passed a massive Social Security bill carrying 15 percent to 59 percent increases for present beneficiaries and larger boosts for people retiring in later years. The controversial rezoning request to make the 14th and Massachusetts area limited to commercial property rather than multi-family units was denied by the City Commission.
