Lawrence voters were expected to stage a heavy turnout to vote on a $2.25 million bond issue for new fire stations, a public swimming pool, airport relocation and a city garage-warehouse.

U.S. Sen. Frank Carlson, noted Kansas Republican, was due to announce soon whether he would seek another term or retire.

The U.S. Senate passed a massive Social Security bill carrying 15 percent to 59 percent increases for present beneficiaries and larger boosts for people retiring in later years. Some Kansas University economics experts said it was a “dangerous move that could bankrupt the system in 25 years or so.”
