Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 31, 1907: “Last night the Theta Nu Epsilon fraternity at the university gave its annual party and when the party was over and the girls had been taken home, the young men had a champagne party over Dick Bros. store. At 6 this morning, police heard a disturbance and found three students drunk in front of Squire’s Studio. A street show case was smashed and a dentist’s sign was torn down and the three were run in for apparent vandalism. One was still carrying the dental sign under his arm. Appropriate action is due to be taken by officials and the university, we are told. : A local man has run a test and says that over a given period, coal cost $14 for heat and natural gas $7.57. This also involved doing away with tending fires and keep them alive. Natural gas has made quite a favorable impact here. : Many elaborate Easter services are planned here with special ceremonies and various choir and instrument performances to highlight the season. : The government has stepped in to stop a rail strike.”
