A group of about 100 anti-Iraq war protesters rallied in Lawrence today, the fourth anniversary of the war’s beginning.

The group started in Veterans Park, 19th and Louisiana streets, before marching down to the military recruiting stations at 23rd and Louisiana streets.

“We want to remind the public, just to push that it hasn’t gone away,” said Belinda Penaloza, a protester who was appointed to speak with the media.

After listening to speakers in the park, the group travel down Louisiana Street, where they had their first encounter with the 25 to 30 Lawrence police officers who also were in attendance. The police told marchers that anyone who wandered into the street could be arrested.

As of this afternoon, no arrests were made and Police Chief Ron Olin said the protesters had been peaceful and well-behaved, which he appreciated.

When the marchers got to the shopping center, they were forbidden from coming on to the property and told to stay behind a pre-painted pink line. The line denoted the edge of the public right-of-way.
