Contractors approved for new sewer plant

The contractors have been selected to build the community’s $87 million sewer treatment plant.

Commissioners unanimously agreed to hire Topeka-based CAS Construction and Kansas City-based Grimm Construction to build the sewer treatment plant and the related collection system. CAS Construction will be responsible for overseeing the piping and collection system, while Grimm will be responsible for construction of the plant.

Commissioners also agreed to hire Wichita-based Professional Engineering Consultant and Kansas City-based Black & Veatch to do design work for the facility. PEC will be responsible for designing the collection system, while Black & Veatch will be responsible for designing the plant.

All the companies pledged to commissioners that they would make it a priority to hire local subcontractors whenever possible. Final contracts are expected to be complete in six months, and construction could begin soon thereafter. The plant is expected to open by 2011.
