Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s two-year capital campaign was deemed a success Friday night.

The goal was $8 million, and more than 2,000 donors helped the hospital raise about $7.5 million. That money will help secure a $45 million expansion project.

The hospital had a celebration, including live music and food, to thank donors and community members.

The expansion project is split into three phases. The first phase, well under way, adds 18 private rooms on the upper floor in the west wing of the hospital. The rooms are the first in the hospital to be wired for Internet access.

Nursing supervisor Steve Gutierrez said the new facilities give the medical staff a sense of pride.

“The staff is most happy they are able to provide patients privacy,” he said.

Skanda Skandaverl,director of facilities and construction, said the hospital’s power plant on the southeast corner of the property is also being updated to make it more energy efficient.

The third phase will be construction of an east tower, which will double the size of the emergency room, intensive care unit and the maternity care unit.

“ER visits are increasing, so staff can handle more patients,” Skandaverl said of the expansion.

In 2004, LMH provided care for 142,571 people and had approximately 28,356 emergency visits.

Skandaverl said when the east tower is complete, a surgery centerwill be constructed where the current emergency room is.

He also said turning lanes would be added to two intersections beginning July 5. The intersections are at Fourth and Maine streets and Fourth and Michigan streets.

A new parking lot also added 122 spaces on the hospital’s west side.

The hospital will continue to raise money by selling bricks for $250 to $500. The bricks can be engraved and will be placed around the hospital’s fountain in the front entrance.
