Annual bicycle race slated for weekend

? The fifth annual Baldwin City Bicycle Race is set for this weekend.

The yearly event will use a six-square-block area in Baldwin City and areas north and south of town.

“Baldwin City is a great venue to have the race,” said race organizer Tony Stewart. “We are getting more involved with the university this year.”

The first of three races will begin at 8:45 a.m. today. It will begin on Douglas County Road 1055 about a mile south of High Street. The time-trial course will run south of town. Then the races come to town. The criterium will begin at 11:30 a.m., with seven or eight races in town.

On Sunday, the races will begin at 9 a.m. at Baldwin High School and head north toward Vinland. Bicyclists will make loops on county roads north of town before finishing in Baldwin City.

Stewart said he expects the usual crowd of 200 to 250 people for the event.
