Two Fort Riley soldiers killed

Two more soldiers from Fort Riley’s 1st Infantry Division have been killed in Iraq, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The Army said that Pfc. Cameron K. Payne, 22, of Corona, Calif., was killed Monday when a bomb exploded near his vehicle while on patrol in Baghdad. He was with the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry. In a separate incident, Pvt. William C. Johnson, 22, of Oxford, N.C., died Tuesday of wounds from a bomb in Baghdad.

Johnson was with 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment. The two deaths bring the total number of Fort Riley soldiers killed in Iraq to 106.

Payne joined the Army in November 2005. This was his first deployment to Iraq.

Johnson joined the Army in September 2005 and also was on his first deployment to Iraq.

Their deaths brought the U.S. death toll to at least 3,513 members of the U.S. military since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
