Sacramento, Calif. ? Kansas University junior Crystal Manning settled for ninth place in the triple jump Saturday in the NCAA Outdoor track and field championships at Spanos Sports Complex.

Manning leaped 42 feet, 81â4 inches, or more than two feet short of her personal best of 44-113â4 established when she won the event at the Big 12 Outdoor championships and broke the KU record.

Manning, a Terrell, Texas, product, also owns the school indoor record in the triple jump with a leap of 43-21â4.

In team scoring, KU’s women finished with eight points and tied for 35th place. On Friday, Abby Emsick was fourth in the discus throw (178-6) and Kate Sultanova tied for fifth in the pole vault at 13-31â2.

“I thought the women’s team did as good as we could have expected,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “I am very proud of Abby Emsick. She really stepped it up this weekend.”

KU’s men’s team recorded 15 points and tied for 18th place. That was the Jayhawks’ highest finish under Redwine and the highest finish for the KU men at the nationals since a tie for 13th in 1989.

“I thought it was a good meet for us,” Redwine said about the men’s team. “I am happy that we finished in the top 20. That was our goal at the beginning of the season.”

KU wound up with six All-Americans, the same number as last year.
