County eligible for aid to cover flood damage

Douglas County has been added to a list of Kansas counties eligible for federal assistance to help pay for emergency services provided during May storms and to help repair storm damage.

Most of the damage in Douglas County was caused by floods, said Terri Smith, interim director of the Emergency Management Department. There was $305,000 in damage reported, mostly from townships where water damaged roads, she said.

“We contacted each of the townships and the cities and asked if they had damage,” Smith said.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency makes funds available to pay 75 percent of the cost of eligible work by state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations.

The FEMA funds can be used to pay for extra manpower brought in by emergency services to deal with water rescues, Smith said. The city of Lawrence had to replace mulch washed from under playground equipment when Burcham Park flooded, she said. Heavy rain also caused a city sewer line to collapse.

Seventeen Kansas counties were added to the assistance list Monday. There were 14 other counties initially placed on the list.
