Real Men Cook set for Sunday

Lawrence-Douglas County NAACP will play host to its annual Real Men Cook event at 5 p.m. Sunday at Steve’s Place, 1388 N. 1293 Road.

The cook-off will feature 10 local men who will compete with their culinary delights in desserts, side dishes, meats, entrees and appetizers. A panel will award top honors and a People’s Choice winner, which will be voted on by the audience.

Donna Bell, president of Lawrence-Douglas County NAACP, said the event was important to their organization.

“It’s close to Father’s Day and celebrates the contributions that African-American men have made, and it celebrates it in a fun way,” she said.

The money raised will go to scholarships for Lawrence High School and Free State High School graduates, and other NAACP activities. It will also go to working with local schools to help parents and teachers understand the achievement gap in education.

Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door, and proceeds will go to the Lawrence-Douglas County NAACP. For more information, call 979-1054.
