Former Kansas University basketball forward Julian Wright, who scored in double figures in his first two games as a professional, came up empty against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night.

The 6-foot-8 first-round pick of the New Orleans Hornets went 0-for-9 from the field and failed to score in a 72-58 NBA summer-league loss in Las Vegas.

Wright – he scored 13 and 10 in previous losses to Minnesota and Golden State – had five rebounds, one block and a turnover with no assists in 23 minutes.

Ex-Jayhawk guard Billy Thomas scored six points off 3-of-4 shooting with three rebounds in nine minutes for the winning Bucks. Thomas missed his only three-point attempt.

In Wednesday’s late game, ex-Jayhawk center Jeff Graves scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 81-73 win over Portland. He made one of two shots and six of six free throws. He also had six fouls in 27 minutes.

¢ Thompson out: Ball State basketball coach Ronny Thompson, who recently was caught conducting offseason workouts – in violation of NCAA rules – for the second straight year, resigned his post Thursday.

This is the same Thompson who acted in a bizarre fashion after the Cardinals’ 64-46 loss to Kansas University last Nov. 24 in Las Vegas.

The son of Georgetown legend John Thompson – whose first and only BSU team went 9-22 last year – shook his head from side to side then butted in when a reporter asked one of the Cardinals about the team’s poor shooting performance.

“I think Kansas had trouble shooting, too,” Thompson barked after a game in which KU hit 40 percent of its shots compared to BSU’s 34 percent.

Thompson then began interviewing the three Cardinals who shared the podium with him.

“Do you think that was because of what you did or what Kansas did?” Thompson asked, the players indicating it was a bit of both.

Thompson – ESPN’s Andy Katz indicated he raised eyebrows by going on vacation the first weekend of the July recruiting period – was expected to hold a news conference today in Muncie, Ind.

At the time, he just might indicate his decision to resign was not over the NCAA violations but a bizarre incident last month in which racist letters were slipped under Thompson’s office door. The Muncie Star-Press reports racial slurs were left on notes in Thompson’s office. The university is trying to figure out who left the notes.

¢ Manning camp coming: KU assistant basketball coach Danny Manning will hold his annual camp for youths from grades two through eight, July 23-27 at Free State High. Registration deadline is July 19. Information is available at basketballcampman.com.

¢ Recruiting: Verdell Jones and J’Mison Morgan, who both have KU on their prospective list of schools, will be playing at the Honda Classic today through Sunday at Okun Fieldhouse, 20200 Johnson Drive in Shawnee.

Jones, a 6-4 guard from Central High in Champaign, Ill., improved his stock at the recent Reebok U event in Philadelphia. Jones, who has put on 10 pounds this summer and now weighs 170, tells Rivals.com he has a list of KU, Illinois, DePaul, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Arizona State, Texas A&M, UCLA, Southern Illinois, Louisville and Oregon. He will trim his list in August.

Morgan, 6-9, 265 from Dallas’ South Oak Cliff High, tells Rivals.com he has a list of KU, Baylor, Texas, UCLA, Alabama and others. He’s from the same high school as KU sophomore Darrell Arthur.

¢ Henry to visit UNC: Xavier Henry, a 6-6 junior guard from Putnam City High in Oklahoma who already has been to season-opening practices at Kansas and Memphis, says he will attend North Carolina’s Late Night on an unofficial recruiting trip this October. Henry, the son of exJayhawk Carl Henry, has been dominant on the summer circuit. He’s currently at the Nike Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C., as is KU coach Bill Self.
