Illegal fireworks reports up slightly this year

The number of illegal fireworks calls Lawrence Police responded to during this year’s Independence Day holiday increased slightly from last year, according to Police Sgt. Paul Fellers.

On Wednesday, police received 218 calls. Twenty-three additional calls came in during the early-morning hours Thursday, according to Sgt. Paul Fellers, police spokesman.

On July 4, 2006, police received 224 calls. Municipal Court records state 12 citations were issued for fireworks violations July 2-11, 2006.

The number of citations issued so far this year will not be available until next week, according to a municipal court official.
