Two Lawrence schools earn Challenge Awards

New York and Broken Arrow schools in Lawrence are among 127 statewide honored with 2006 Challenge Awards.

The awards recognize Kansas schools that performed better than expected for their socioeconomic status on state assessments in reading or mathematics.

Schools receiving the awards have a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches.

New York will be honored for fifth-grade reading. The school received a Standard of Excellence rating for reading, with 85.8 percent of its students scoring at grade level or better.

Broken Arrow will be honored for sixth-grade reading. Broken Arrow had 92.5 percent of its students meeting grade level or better, and received a Standard of Excellence.
