Callahan climbing BHS wrestling chart

Baldwin High wrestler Kevin Callahan is making steady progress on the Bulldogs’ all-time wins list, and he’s doing it at the expense of not only his head coach, but his mentor’s family as well.

With his championship run Saturday in the 130-pound weight class at the Bobcat Classic in Basehor, Callahan, a junior, climbed to third in the rankings with 114 career victories, moving past former Baldwin state champion Jay Harris (111).

Jay Harris is the older brother of Bulldogs coach Kit Harris, who earned 100 wins during his Baldwin career – No. 7 in program history – and saw Callahan pass his total earlier this season.

Callahan is now 25-1 on the season, leading all area wrestlers in winning percentage, and has recorded 11 pins.

Mix and match: The Free State High 200-yard medley relay team of Chase Torgerson, Julian Spangler, Mitch Moore and Kendall Harris qualified for the Kansas state boys swimming meet with a time of 1 minute, 44.73 seconds during Thursday’s home meet at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

The required time for a state qualification is 1 minute, 50 seconds.

However, they’re not the first FSHS combo to achieve that feat this season. The Firebirds already qualified for state in the event earlier in the year with a different team.

Free State coach Annette McDonald said the makeup of the team that will compete in the event at state has yet to be determined. She will put together who she thinks are the best swimmers for the event.

Feel the love: Thursday night’s meet also represented Senior Recognition Day for the Firebirds.

Honored seniors were Cody Briggs, Travis Everett, Blaine Juhl, Todd Lee, Bryant Peterson, Drew Schelar, Julian Spangler, Chase Torgerson, Grady Walker.

Team managers Kacee Abel and Arielle Laue-Minden also were recognized.

Back soon: The postponement of Friday night’s boys basketball game between Lawrence High and Olathe South was good news for at least one LHS player.

Lions senior John Novotny rolled his ankle during warmups prior to the Jan. 6 contest against Olathe Northwest and missed Tuesday’s loss against Shawnee Mission East.

Novotny could return Thursday for Lawrence High’s opening-round game against Topeka Seaman in the Topeka Invitational.
