Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 28, 1907: “The preliminary hearing for four young farmers was held today regarding the murder of Houston McNees at No. 10 schoolhouse on Dec. 21. There apparently had been some conflicts, rock-throwing resulted and then McNees was killed by a gunshot. Officers are still trying to get all the evidence and facts. : The police arrested a young girl at the home of her aunt in North Lawrence for stealing articles from the home of Dr. James Naismith while she was employed as a servant. The family reported quite a number of articles missing and an arrest was made. The girl denies any knowledge of the crime. The Naismiths first declined to report the thievery, hoping to help the 16-year-old reform. After hesitating, they changed their minds. : The YMCA boys have made final arrangements for a big athletic field, which will be their playground all summer. It is on Missouri Street on the corner of Henry and covers the whole block on the west side of the street. Nominal rent will be charged.”
