County health official to discuss bird flu

Kim Ens, a disease control program coordinator for the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, will be at Baker University next week to share information about the avian flu.

Her presentation, “Preparing for Pandemic Influenza,” will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Rice Auditorium on the Baker campus in Baldwin City.

The disease has been confined mostly to Asia and parts of Europe, but concerns about outbreaks of the disease have been voiced by some U.S. health officials because humans have little natural immunity to avian flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ens’ presentation will discuss what avian flu is and how families can be prepared.

“We’re asking communities to start thinking about being prepared,” Ens said.
