FBI putting up digital ‘wanted’ billboards

The Wichita area soon will be among 20 major metro centers nationwide to have digital billboards showing fugitives, missing people and other high-priority security messages from the FBI, the agency said Wednesday.

The FBI said that initiative, tested in Philadelphia, is made possible through a partnership with the Clear Channel Outdoor advertising company, which is donating the space.

The billboards will “enable us to highlight those who we’re looking for the most in a given area: violent criminals, kidnap victims, missing kids, bank robbers, even terrorists,” the FBI said in a news release.

“And we’ll be able to feature them quickly-right after a crime is committed, a child is taken, or an attack is launched.”

The first billboard fliers went up in the Philadelphia area on Sept. 13, with images of 11 of violent fugitives on eight billboards and a 24-hour hot line for the public to call.
