Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 8, 1907: “The first Nickel Theater was opened in Lawrence about a year ago. Since then, there have been three other Nickels opened. At present there are only three five-cent shows operating but another is supposed to open soon. The first five-cent show in Lawrence was opened about a year ago in the 700 block on Massachusetts and still has good business. Others have come and gone. : In Louisville, Ky., a raid was made this morning by a party of ‘Night Riders,’ a secret organization of armed tobacco growers determined to restrict the output of tobacco throughout the South. Two hundred thousand dollars worth of property was reportedly destroyed. The ‘Riders’ took possession of the town. The buildings of the police department, fire department and telephone and telegraph companies were all destroyed. Four tobacco houses and several residences were also badly damaged by the fire. Many shots were fired and many were beaten, if not killed.”
