Ex-Jayhawk Metcalf had ‘crazy’ day

? Travis Metcalf’s Wednesday started near the French Quarter and ended in what felt like the fourth quarter.

Metcalf, a Kansas University product, went from New Orleans, where he was playing for Triple-A Oklahoma, to Baltimore, where he was a part of a record-breaking doubleheader night for the Rangers, and back to Arlington in 24 hours.

It was a full day of plane flights, two full games (he played 12 innings), tying a club record for RBIs in a doubleheader and shaking his head in disbelief – “Did we really just score 30 runs?”

“It was a crazy day,” Metcalf said. “A buddy sent me a text message asking if I’d been traded to an NFL team. That was a football score out there. It was unbelievable.”

He had struggled in a three-week span in Oklahoma, batting .148 (9-for-61) with no homers and 17 strikeouts.

“It was the worst I was hitting in my life,” Metcalf said. “I thought what I was doing was canceling out my call-up.”
