From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 17, 1907: “A local man killed a bull snake in his yard yesterday and it measured 57 inches. : Wherry T. Morton was found guilty of using offensive language to his wife and was fined a total of $6.50 by police judge Menter. He protested and plans to file an appeal. : The officers of the local National Guard group are canvassing for more men to add to the ranks before going to the annual encampment at Fort Riley. There are only 44 men now and efforts are being made to bring that total at least to 60. : The Salvation Army is taking all the contributions possible for its coming picnic for destitute mothers and children at the Poor Farm Grove Aug. 20. : Farmers are reporting that many ‘urchins’ are now raiding the melon patches and several have caught boys and brought them before the police chief. Losses are heavy for some. We hope judges and police will crack down hard on such thieves who cause considerable loss for hard-working people.”
