Yankees 9, Blue Jays 2

Toronto – Alex Rodriguez got hit, and Roger Clemens made sure it didn’t go unanswered. Rodriguez was hit on his knee by a pitch from Toronto’s Josh Towers during New York’s victory over the Blue Jays, and Clemens plunked Alex Rios in the middle of his back.

Benches and bullpens emptied twice after Rodriguez was hit in the third inning. Clemens and Yankees manager Joe Torre were ejected by plate umpire Angel Hernandez after Rios was hit by the first pitch of the seventh. Clemens and Torre likely will be suspended.

On a night that top prospect Joba Chamberlain made his major-league debut and Jason Giambi returned after more than two months on the disabled list, the Yankees won their fifth straight and improved to 20-7 since the All-Star break.

Tigers 9, Devil Rays 6

Detroit – Rookie Ryan Raburn had two RBIs and scored the go-ahead run in a three-run eighth. Detroit led 6-1 after six innings, but Jonny Gomes tripled and scored in the seventh before hitting his second career grand slam in the eighth to tie it.

Raburn led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, and Dan Wheeler (0-1) hit Craig Monroe with the next pitch. Both runners advanced on Brandon Inge’s sacrifice, and Curtis Granderson hit a grounder to second baseman Brendan Harris, who threw late to home.

Mariners 10 Orioles 3

Baltimore – Raul Ibanez had two homers and four RBIs, and Jeff Weaver earned his first win since June 25. Ibanez had gone 31 games and 116 at-bats without a home run until he hit a solo shot in the second inning against Steve Trachsel. He added a two-run drive off Jamie Walker in the seventh and doubled in a run in the eighth.

Rangers 8, Athletics 6

Arlington, Texas – Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in the tiebreaking run with a sixth-inning double, and Kason Gabbard went six innings to earn his first victory.

Indians 2, White Sox 1

Chicago – Jake Westbrook retired 23 of 24 batters at one stretch, and Grady Sizemore hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning.

Angels 10, Red Sox 4

Anaheim, Calif. – Gary Matthews Jr. drove in four runs after robbing Boston’s Coco Crisp of a home run.
