Afenir, Czyz stymie Sooners

? Sophomore catcher Buck Afenir went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and sophomore left-hander Nick Czyz allowed just one earned run in six innings of work as the Kansas University baseball team knocked off Oklahoma, 6-3, on Saturday in a Big 12 Conference battle at Dale Mitchell Park.

The Jayhawks (21-26 overall, 7-13 Big 12) used two big innings to claim the victory. In the top of the second, Afenir and Ryne Price drew back-to-back walks and scored on a triple by Brock Simpson. Designated hitter Joe Servais then hit into a fielder’s choice to plate Simpson for a 3-0 lead.

After OU (28-16, 8-9) cut the margin to 3-2, Afenir again extended the margin with a two-run double in the eighth, and ultimately scored on a sacrifice fly by Simpson, who finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Czyz (3-6) earned his first win of the conference season, while Paul finished for his sixth save.

The two teams will close out the three-game series at 1 p.m. today.
