Topeka ? The state’s seat belt law will be strengthened to encourage teenagers to buckle up under a bill signed Wednesday by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

The new law, which goes into effect July 1, requires anyone in the front seat to wear a seat belt or face a $30 fine. Starting Jan. 1, the failure of anyone between 14 and 18 years old to wear a seat beat will bring a $60 fine. Currently such fines are $10.

“There’s no question that wearing a seat belt could save your life, and we want drivers to get in the habit of buckling up every time they get in the car,” Sebelius said in a statement.

Seat belt violations remain a secondary offense in Kansas, meaning drivers can’t be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt unless they’re stopped for another reason, such as speeding.
