On Monday night, the Chicago White Sox faded to black.

One season after they ended an 88-year title drought by storming through October, the White Sox will watch the postseason unfold this fall along with 22 other teams following a 14-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.

Not long after being handed its most lopsided defeat of the season, Chicago was eliminated from the playoff chase when the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals, 8-1, to secure at least a wild-card berth.

“It’s frustrating,” Jim Thome said. “When you’re a good team, you expect to go a lot farther. We’re not going to where we want to go.”

Casey Blake hit a grand slam – Cleveland’s major-league-record-tying 14th this season – to highlight an eight-run sixth inning that finished off Jon Garland (17-7) and the White Sox on this night – and for all of 2006.

After shuffling into their clubhouse, the White Sox didn’t even bother tuning into the Twins’ game on TV.

Yankees 16, Devil Rays 1

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui hit three-run homers in a wild six-run first for New York.

Abreu and Matsui homered off Jae Seo (1-7) during the 26-minute half inning that also saw Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon and pitching coach Mike Butcher ejected.

The Yankees (94-62), who had lost three of four, are tied with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in the AL.

Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 0

Toronto – Shaun Marcum and Jason Frasor combined on a two-hitter, and Toronto moved into second place in the AL East.

Alex Rios and Bengie Molina homered for the Blue Jays, who are a half-game ahead of Boston.

Marcum (3-4), a rookie, allowed two hits and struck out a career-high 10 in eight innings. Frasor pitched a perfect ninth to complete Toronto’s sixth shutout of the season.

Angels 8, Rangers 3

Anaheim, Calif. – Vladimir Guerrero hit two home runs, and Chone Figgins added a solo shot for Los Angeles in its third straight victory.

Joe Saunders (7-3) gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings, struck out four and walked none.

Juan Rivera paced the Angels’ 18-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance.

His four hits tied a career high.

Guerrero’s 32nd homer of the season gave Los Angeles a 2-0 lead in the first. He added a solo shot in the eighth for his second multi-homer game of the season and 29th of his career.

Michael Young of Texas had a run-scoring single in the third for his 100th RBI of the season, a career high.

Edinson Volquez (1-6) gave up five runs and nine hits.

Mariners 10, Athletics 9 (10)

Seattle – Ichiro Suzuki had five hits and scored the winning run, and Seattle snapped a 15-game losing streak against Oakland that kept the Athletics’ magic number at two for clinching the AL West title.

Willie Bloomquist lined an RBI single with two outs in the 10th to give the Mariners a comeback win.
