Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 19, 1906: “The number of recent deaths in Lawrence from diphtheria is four and the number of cases reported to the county health officer is 10. The county says we have an epidemic and to take all precautions against infection. : The university football outlook is quite encouraging and the team seems to have good men at every spot but quarterback. But coach Bert Kennedy says he has a good candidate in mind. There are several fighting for the job. : George Hurlburt, star center fielder for the Topeka baseball team, made the greatest catch of his life yesterday when he married Hazel, the daughter off Dr. and Mrs. G.J. Mulvane. The girl is a member of a well-known wealthy family and the catch was a good one for Hurlburt. : Enormous damage has been done by a sea cyclone, or typhoon, on the Hong Kong shore and it is feared thousands may be dead. Many ships and their crews were lost.”
