Suspects face murder charge for death of pregnant teen

? A Sedgwick County judge has determined there is enough evidence to try two men in the death of a pregnant 14-year-old.

Elgin “Ray-Ray” Robinson Jr., 20, and Theodore Burnett, 49, are charged with capital murder and other offenses in the death of Chelsea Brooks.

She was found in June in a shallow grave in neighboring Butler County.

During the preliminary hearing, which ended Friday, the key witness was co-defendant Everett Le Gentry.

He told Sedgwick County District Judge Ben Burgess that Robinson wanted Chelsea killed because Robinson was her baby’s father and the family wanted to prosecute him for statutory rape. The policy in Sedgwick County is to wait until a baby is born to conduct paternity tests.

Gentry, 18, said Robinson offered Burnett $500 to kill Chelsea. Gentry said he drove the car while Burnett strangled the girl.

Burnett’s attorney, Gary Owens, asked Gentry about his plea deal.

Gentry agreed to testify against the two other defendants and was allowed to plead guilty to capital murder as a juvenile instead of as an adult. He could be eligible for parole after 25 years.

With an adult conviction, he could have received a mandatory 50 years in prison.

Because Gentry was 17 when the killing occurred, he could not have received the death penalty.
