Advocates want homeless person on committee

Advocates for the homeless urged city commissioners Tuesday night to appoint a homeless individual to the city’s Community Commission on Homelessness.

The 11-member advisory board currently does not have anyone who is homeless. Commissioners on Tuesday appointed Judy DeSetti, who is not homeless, to the board. Advocates for the homeless had hoped that a homeless individual would be appointed because the position that was open previously had been filled by someone who had experienced homelessness.

“It seems odd to have no one who is presently homeless on it,” said Bill Sims, who said it was tough for people who hadn’t been homeless to grasp all the issues surrounding homelessness.

Commissioners ultimately unanimously approved the appointment of DeSetti, but Mayor Mike Amyx said he would consider the issue with future appointments.
