Museum offers glimpse of Victorian celebrations

Interested in seeing how Christmas was celebrated more than a century ago? You can do so at “A Victorian Christmas” program Saturday in Lawrence.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

At the event, children can take part in making party crackers, garlands and other historical decorations. They also can whisper their wish lists to Father Christmas and visit the newly renovated Victorian playhouse and reading corner at the museum.

Music will be provided by the St. Nicholas Stringband (12:30 p.m.), New Horizons Clarinets (1:45 p.m.) and musicians from the Americana Music Academy (3 p.m.).

Gifts are available at the museum’s Miss Lizzie’s gift shop.

Admission is $5 per child, when accompanied by an adult. Adults may attend for free, but donations are accepted.
