Law enforcement patrols to increase

Local law enforcement agencies say they’ll be hitting the highways in coming days for extra traffic patrols surrounding the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol and Lawrence Police both have announced special patrols starting Monday and lasting through Nov. 26.

During the Thanksgiving weekend in 2005 (Wednesday through Sunday) there were 785 accidents in Kansas resulting in 234 injuries and three deaths. Of those accidents, 49 were alcohol-related, according to the state.

The highway patrol will pay special attention to enforcing seat belt and child-passenger laws, as well as DUI. A grant administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation will pay overtime wages for officers who normally would be off-duty.
