Jones wins re-election to Douglas County Commission

Charles Jones cruised through election night unopposed and easily earned a third term as 1st District Douglas County Commissioner.

Jones, a Democrat, picked up 5,637 votes in the 21 precincts in his district. There were 206 write-in votes against him.

“I love my work,” Jones said Tuesday night as he watched election results being posted at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

“I really feel right now that if you care about public service, local government is the place where you have the biggest impact,” Jones, 54, said. “There is no other place I want to be.”

Jones, however, said this would probably be his last term as commissioner.

“I’m getting older and it’s somebody else’s turn,” he said. “You never say never, but I’m not thinking about another term.”

There are still several issues Jones repeatedly has said he wants to see taken care of during the next four years. One of them is implementation of the county subdivision and rural development regulations, which has been a longterm project of Jones and fellow commissioners Bob Johnson and Jere McElhaney.

Jones also wants to be involved in working with the Lawrence City Commission in a continuing effort to redevelop the former Farmland fertilizer plant at the east edge of Lawrence.

If he serves only one more term as commissioner, Jones said he doesn’t have plans to run for a state office.

“I’m pretty liberal and it works in Douglas County, but I’m not sure about how it would work statewide,” he said.
