Group seeks advocates for kids in court system

Agency: Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocates

Contact: 832-5172

Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) seeks volunteers for an upcoming training class.

CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for children who have been abused or neglected and are under protection of the juvenile court. They are appointed by a judge to meet regularly with a child, review records and talk to those involved in the child’s case. They monitor the situation so the child remains safe until a permanent resolution is reached and make recommendations to the judge to promote the child’s best interests.

Training for new volunteers will take place from mid-June to mid-July. Prospective volunteers must be 21 years or older, have an interest in children, have good social and writing skills, have the ability to be objective, submit to background checks and be able to commit to a minimum of one year of service.

Interested volunteers should visit the CASA Web site, www.orgsites.com/ks/douglascountycasa, to download an application or contact the office for an application. To be considered for this training session, applications must be received at the office by June 7. For more information, call 832-5172 or e-mail casa@douglas-county.com.
