Endless summer

Kansas festivals provide diverse activities and entertainment

Sometimes I wonder

What I’m gonna do

‘Cause there ain’t no cure

For the summertime blues

– Eddie Cochran, “Summertime Blues”

There’s no need to wonder what YOU are gonna do in Kansas this summer.

No need to worry about the summertime blues, either – unless it’s actual blues music you’re looking for. (There’s even plenty of that this season at the Kansas City Kansas Street Blues Festival or the Chautauqua Hills Blues Festival.)

Yes, there are dozens and dozens of festivals happening throughout the Sunflower State during the next few months.

Some events provide incredible concert-going opportunities. Lawrence’s third Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival features 100 rock, jam and “none-of-the-above” bands spread over four days, while Manhattan’s Country Stampede showcases Nashville headliners Toby Keith and Gretchen Wilson. For those more in a classical mood, check out the Symphony in the Flint Hills, which imports the Kansas City Symphony and their 100-voice chorus to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

Or there are happenings that celebrate the history and famous faces of the region, such as the Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison, the Laura Ingalls Wilder-themed Prairie Days Festival in Independence and the Pony Express Festival in Hanover.

And some play up that whole “Wizard of Oz” rep (Yellow Brick Road Festival in Sedan).
