Although Lawrence residents won’t get federal aid to help pay for storm damage from the March 12 microburst, some aid may be available to help pay for public building and infrastructure damage.

Last week a joint, state, federal and local damage assessment team visited Lawrence. The result of that assessment could be determined soon, said Gene Krase, administrator with Kansas Emergency Management.

Assessments were being made in Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties as well as Douglas.

Included in the assessments, in addition to public buildings, would be overtime for government employee cleanup costs such as picking up tree debris. Damage to Kansas University buildings, estimated to be at least $6 million, also would be included, Krase said. So would any nonprofit medical clinics.

The Douglas County Courthouse sustained damage as did some buildings at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

It could still be several weeks before funds are made available once it is determined that the county is eligible for assistance, Krase said.

“Kansas is a state of disasters,” said Joy Moser, spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General’s office, which oversees disaster response. “We have more disasters than other neighboring states.”
