Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self met with his players Sunday night upon their return from spring break.

He had his first face-to-face conversation with freshman guard Brandon Rush since the Jayhawks’ season-ending loss to Bradley – after which Rush said he was definitely returning to KU for his sophomore season.

While that is still the plan … Self told Rush he would contact NBA teams to gauge where Rush would be tapped if he was to enter the June draft. Self will present the information to Rush, who then can make a formal, final decision.

“What he said (after BU loss) is accurate. I’m still taking his word, what he said,” Self said. “We’ll still give him information. A decision should not be based on emotion. I’m not saying this was, but I know it shouldn’t be based on emotion.”

Underclassmen have until April 29 to enter the draft.

“Based on what we talked about, it’s the same game plan as he’s had,” Self said. “He’ll just focus in on school, getting better, working in the weight room. We’ll do the investigating (for him). He said, ‘I’m not going to think about that (NBA).”’

As far as time frame, KU’s coach said: “I don’t know. Nothing will be done (completed) in the next couple weeks.”

Awards: KU’s awards ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. April 11 in the Kansas Ballroom on the fifth floor of the Kansas Union. KU seniors Jeff Hawkins, Christian Moody, Stephen Vinson and Moulaye Niang will be honored as well as broadcaster Max Falkenstien. The season-highlight video also will be shown and team awards handed out.
