Old Home Town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 11, 1906: “While Kansas City is howling lustily for reduced street car fares, Lawrence marches sturdily along with absolutely free fares. : Arizona and New Mexico were denied statehood in the latest vote, that gave statehood to Oklahoma. Arizona and New Mexico have no business being states right now and will not be ready for 20 years, despite political moves to get them approved. : The bowling alleys at the YMCA building have been opened and it was a gala occasion. Hugh Blair rolled the first ball, scored a strike and this made a good beginning for the new alleys. : Three officers and six horses were killed last night when a posse of federal deputy marshals was ambushed by the Wyckliffe gang of outlaws in the Spavinaw Hill of Oklahoma. The gang has Choctaw Indians wanted for an earlier murder and it appears a number of other Indians are joining the rebels. : The Interstate Commerce Commission began an inquiry into oil rates in Kansas City today. Standard Oil is the target of many.”
