Old Home Town – 40 years ago

The car of Robert Evans, 14, 620 Ind., became the first one sanctioned for entry in the Soap Box Derby race here on July 4, the first such race in local history. All entries had to pass a series of special vehicle strength and safety tests administered by the sponsoring Lawrence Jaycees and Winter Chevrolet.

The Lawrence Elks Club, which had voted to sell its Vermont Street site to the city, still was unsettled about a new location for its operations.

The local wheat harvest was in full swing with yields and quality reportedly quite high despite recent rain interruptions.
