Amateur qualifying canceled

The Kansas Amateur qualifying tournament scheduled today at Eagle Bend Golf Course has been canceled.

The Kansas Golf Assn. determined it could accommodate the entries it had received to the championship field and local qualifying was unnecessary.

The Kansas Amateur Championship will take place July 24-30 in Garden City. A total of 312 participants will play two rounds of stroke play at Southwind Country Club and Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, said Casey Old, golf programs manager of the KGA. The top 64 will advance to a match-play format for the championship at Southwind.

Old said most of the native Kansans on the Kansas University squad would participate in Garden City, including seniors Luke Trammell and Pete Krsnich, juniors Gary Woodland and Tyler Docking, sophomore Joey Mundy and freshmen Patrick Roth and Zach Pederson.

Jason Sigler, a Leavenworth native, will not play in the event because he graduated and took a job in the Kansas City area, Old said.

The last time that Garden City played host to the Kansas Amateur Championship was 1997.
