A Lawrence woman received a nine-year prison sentence Friday for her role in a failed plot to kill a drug informant.

Kimberly M. Sanders, 28, is the last of five people to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in connection with the April 2004 shooting of Tania Atkins in north Lawrence.

“Ms. Sanders’ role was to appear to befriend the witness and to gather information to be used in planning the murder of the witness,” U.S. Atty. Eric Melgren said in a statement.

Four other people, Andre L. Ivory, 30, Pamela L. Tyler, 49, Kyle Crayton, 26, and Chaconie Edwards, 28, already have been sentenced to prison in the case.

Atkins had helped police build a crack-cocaine dealing case against Ivory.

She was shot April 29 after being struck by a stolen car while leaving her job as a janitor at Astaris Chemical Co. in north Lawrence.

She was shot in the legs but was able to get away and flag down police.

The case was investigated by the Lawrence Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the joint city-county Drug Enforcement Unit.
