Four people were being held in the local jail on charges of armed robbery after they were stopped for a traffic violation shortly after a holdup at a service station at 2230 Iowa early in the day.

Some Lawrence developers and construction contractors were deliberately letting their special assessment taxes go unpaid and were “swallowing” the 18 percent delinquency penalty rather than borrowing money through normal channels, according to City Manager Buford Watson. Watson called for a concerted effort by city departments to get the developers to pay up on overdue “specials.”

The City Commission decided it would not water down the city’s floodplain zoning regulations along the east branch of Yankee Tank Creek in southwest Lawrence.

On June 16, the City Commission was to discuss the future of the Lawrence Opera House, including the possibility of a city option to buy the historic building, currently for sale. The goal was to initiate public discussion to find a productive use for the structure.
