The $2.5 million Naismith Hall at Kansas University, built by Northwestern Mutual Life of Milwaukee, was one of 27 such dormitories being set up on a private basis at a cost of more than $101 million to the firm. It represented a new trend in college housing, creating privately financed dorms that paid taxes as opposed to the non-taxable university-operated dorms.
