Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 17, 1906: “The examiners have finished grading the papers of the 80 applicants for teachers’ certificates and 27 failed to pass the ‘quiz.’ That is about a third. Last year the failures were about 40 percent. Only two applicants got top grades. The county superintendent is asking anyone with a valid certificate who wants to teach here to get in touch with him. : The assistant attorney general of Kansas will file charges against two city officials on the west side of Kansas City, Kan., for collecting “protection money” from joint-keepers.
