Lawrence man arrested after car wreck

A Lawrence resident was arrested early Sunday morning after the car he was riding in crashed into a utility pole near 31st and Louisiana streets.

The car, driven by 33-year-old Kimberly Taylor, Lawrence, struck a pole just before midnight Saturday night after losing control of the vehicle. The accident knocked out power to some homes nearby.

Lawrence Police, Douglas County Sheriff’s officers and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded to the scene, and after questioning, arrested the 27-year-old male passenger on charges of attempted manslaughter, said Lt. Kari Wempe, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Wempe would not say whether the man had grabbed the steering wheel or interfered with driving in some other manner, saying that sheriff’s officers continue to investigate the incident.

Sheriff’s officer interviewed a woman passenger before she was transported to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., with serious injuries.
